As a psychotherapist, my clients ask me all sorts of questions on how they can ask the right things during therapy and how they can get the maximum out of their therapy sessions. So in this article, I thought I would do just that! So let’s dive into some useful tips on how to get the most out of your Psychotherapy sessions.
Talk about how you feel or what you want: if you notice the conversation is perhaps slowing down with your therapist, or you have difficulty finding a concrete topic to talk about, then sharing your current feelings with your therapist is always a step in the right direction!
Expand your horizons (try new things): therapy is a safe environment, so do not be afraid to talk about something new or try to develop your personality in a way that is desirable to you during your sessions! For example, you can talk in a calm, controlled manner if you struggle with anger issues, or assertively if you are perhaps overly shy!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions: this is one of the most important tips! Therapy is meant to improve your state of mind over time, thereby improving your life. So, sometimes your therapist can jump ahead or go a little too fast or you and your therapist have reached a concept that is a little hard to grasp. In any case, do not be afraid to ask your therapist questions or to repeat something they said.
Be engaged in your therapy: keeping a positive state of mind and openness and going the extra mile can come a long way in your therapy journey. Just like most things in life; if you are engaged and put effort into something it can become very fruitful!
